About

About me: I just graduated from Sweet Briar College, a small women's liberal arts college in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Spanish, minor in Dance. In college, I made a point of taking every opportunity I could to travel. The first of those trips was to Burkina Faso over winter break during my sophomore year with a research grant. On my way home I met a returning Peace Corps Volunteer and that's when I really became interested in Peace Corps. I spent my junior year abroad in Sevilla <3 with my college's program and at that point had my heart set on moving back to Spain after I graduated. At the same time, I still checked the Peace Corps website when they posted new jobs quarterly. Finally, the summer I came home from Spain I started on my Peace Corps application (in tandem with an application to go teach English in Spain). At the end of the summer I spent 3 weeks doing a work exchange in Costa Rica where I decided, after many late night discussions with myself, that I would only be applying for Peace Corps. Thinking about the summer research project I did on the "Northern Triangle" (Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras), your inaction implies your complicity became my mantra and I repeated it to myself all the way home. I applied for a Youth in Development position in Guatemala (first choice) at the end of August, was put "under consideration" in September/October, invited to/had my interview during finals week in December and received an invitation mid February. Y aqui estamos.

About Peace Corps: Peace Corps was officially started by JFK via Executive Order in 1961. The three stated goals of PC are (1) to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women (2) to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served and (3) to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

About Youth in Development: YiD in Guatemala has 2 goals, that "youth will increase their practice of life skills to lead healthy lives" and secondly that community leaders will increase capacity to support youth members of the community in leading healthier lives

(more to come on YiD)
